Student engagement
Student engagement is an integral part of the University-led review process, ensuring that student perspectives inform all stages of the review, from preparation to the consideration and communication of outcomes.
School President involvement
The Director of Teaching (DoT) should invite the School President to comment on the Reflective Analysis prior to its submission to the review panel. Further information on the School President's role in the review process is provided in the School President guidance.
Notifying students and promoting participation
The DoT should notify students at an early stage that the review is taking place and explain how they can participate, for example through the first SSCC meeting of the academic year and via email. A Student communication template (Word) is provided and may be adapted, as appropriate.
Identifying students to meet with the review panel
The DoT, in consultation with the School President, is responsible for identifying a representative cross-section of students to meet with the review panel. Meetings are held in parallel sessions to ensure representation across different levels of study.
Participating students should, as far as possible, reflect the diversity of the student body. This may include, for example: international, home and RUK students; those studying joint degrees or collaborative programmes; students entering via supported pathways (e.g. Gateway); and those studying part-time or online.
A Briefing note for students (Word) meeting with the review panel is provided and may be adapted, as appropriate.
Sharing outcomes with students
The DoT is responsible for sharing review outcomes as follows:
- Meet with the School President to discuss the evaluative report and proposed actions in response to the review panel’s recommendations.
- Prepare a summary for SSCC, including:
- commendations and recommendations
- the outcome of the review (confidence statement)
- proposed actions
- a formal note of thanks to contributors
- Circulate the summary to all students within the School or Department. A progress update may be provided at a subsequent meeting.
