The University Rent Guarantor Scheme is a pilot initiative designed to support eligible students who are unable to provide a suitable personal guarantor when renting private accommodation in Scotland.

The pilot is initially available to entrant international postgraduate taught applicants, as well as care-experienced or estranged students at any level of study.

The scheme is discretionary, and meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance.

Duration of award

The University will only guarantee a tenancy agreement for up to 12 months.

Additional criteria

Students applying to the rent guarantor scheme must agree to these terms and conditions:

Eligibility criteria

  • Be fully enrolled at the university for the entire length of the tenancy
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be entering a Private Residential Tenancy (PRT) with a registered landlord or letting agent in Scotland
  • Does not owe any money to the university
  • Be able to show they can afford their share of the rent

How to apply

You should apply to the University Rent Guarantor Scheme once you have taken the following steps:

  • Identified a property where you intend to live
  • Checked with your prospective landlord or letting agent that they are willing to accept the University as your rent guarantor

Please note that the University is unable to complete guarantor application forms or sign tenancy agreements directly. It is therefore your responsibility to confirm that the landlord or agent can accommodate this arrangement before applying.
